Wood Science for Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Proceedings of the International Conference held by COST Action IE0601

The main objectives of the Workshop, which have been achieved at a quite satisfactory level, can be summarized as follows:

  • To present a “state of the art” about selected subjects dealt with by the Action (From the program: “Historic wood – structure and properties”, “Wood material – ageing and non-biological degradation”, “Assessment & Diagnosis”, “Diagnosing the surface of painted wood” “Diagnosing the efficiency of object treatments”, “Contributions from Wood Science to conservation issues”, “Expressing needs in the field of conservation, of objects and/or monuments, in matter of Wood Science”);
  • To improve mutual knowledge and acquaintance between MC Members, and WG members;
  • To present current ongoing research, and inform specialists of different fields, all working towards conservation of WCHOs (Wooden Objects belonging to the Cultural Heritage), about the work of their colleagues and the scientific work being carried out in different Institutions;
  • To provide an opportunity for discussing interdisciplinary subjects, which are very important for study and conservation of WCHOs;
  • To identify the main subjects to be discussed in forthcoming activities.

Agrosystems and Labour Relations in European Rural Societies

It goes without saying that agriculture is a form of colonisation of nature by society. In the course of history the articulation of natural and societal features gave rise to a wide variety of agrosystems within the boundaries of Europe which were embedded in supra-regional political and economic contexts at least from the High Middle Ages onwards. By following an integrative approach, this volume defines agrosystems as production systems based on the ecological and socioeconomic relations involved in the reproduction of rural societies at multiple levels. The authors explore the articulation of natural and societal factors through the prism of labour relations. The structural and practical organization of labour is seen as the crucial link between rural production and reproduction. Accordingly, the contributions focus on the rural household as the basic unit of production and reproduction in different temporal and spatial contexts. Therefore, the question arises if the changes in ecosystems and social systems have so fundamentally altered European agriculture up to now that peasant family farming will disappear (if it is no longer sustained by state intervention).

Performance in Use and New Products of Wood Based Composites

  • Pages: 325
  • Author(s): M. Fan, M. Ohlmeyer, M. Irle et al
  • Publisher(s): Brunel
  • ISBN/ISSN: 978-1-902316-75-8

The use of wood-based panels can help reduce the environmental impact of several sectors such as the construction, furniture and packaging industries. This requires the panels to be fit for purpose and their life-cycle performance to be accurately determined. Researchers in Working Group 3 of COST Action E49 made a positive contribution by assessing the performance of both existing and new wood-based panel products.
This publication provides a broad overview of the wood-based panel industry. It is of particular interest to students and researchers in wood science and technology, structural engineering and material sciences. It reviews the achievements of research in the last few decades within and outside Europe, by outlining the scientific demand for the future in five broad themes.
This book does not only review the performance of wood-based panels but also conformity, environment and sustainability aspects. Moreover, it provides an overview of new wood-based panels and finishing with a final appraisal of research needs.

Indicators of Environmental Sustainability in Transport: An interdisciplinary approach to methods

  • Author(s): R. Joumard and H. Gudmundsson (eds)
  • Publisher(s): Les Collections de l'INRETS

  • ISBN/ISSN: 978-2-85782-684-2

The final report tries to answer the following questions: How can environmental impacts of transport be measured? How can measurements be transformed into operational indicators? How can several indicators be jointly considered? And how can indicators be used in planning and decision making? Firstly we provide definition of 'indicator of environmental sustainability in transport'. The functions, strengths and weaknesses of indicators as measurement tools, and as decision support tools are discussed. We define what "environmental sustainability in transport" may mean through the transport system, the concepts of sustainable development and of environment. The concept of 'chain of causality' between a source and a final target is developed, as a common reference for indicators and assessments. As the decision making context influences the perceived and actual needs for indicators and methods, we also analysed the dimensions and context of decision making. We derived criteria and methods for the assessment and selection of indicators of environmental sustainability in transport, in terms of measurement, monitoring and management. The methods and the criteria are exemplified for seven chains of causality. Methods for a comprehensive joint consideration of environmentally sustainable indicators are analyzed and evaluated. They concerned aggregated or composite indicators as well as multi-criteria methods. Five case studies are presented. Finally, recommendations for continued research and development of indicators and joint considerations methods for assessment of environmental sustainability in transport are given.

COST 732 Model Evaluation Case Studies: Approach and Results

Urban emissions occur mainly within or slightly above the canopy layer i.e. within a zone where the atmospheric flow is heavily disturbed by buildings and other obstacles. It is wellknown that buildings can deflect plumes and result in sometimes increased and sometimes decreased dilution, dependent on the density, height and shape of the obstacles and their orientation with the wind flow. In comparison to unobstructed terrain, local concentrations can change by more than an order of magnitude. As a consequence, it is inappropriate to consider buildings within a surface roughness parameterisation only, particularly if predictions on the scale of a few streets or city blocks are being made. These facts, in conjunction with increasing computer power, have promoted the development of obstacle-resolving or obstacleaccommodating prognostic and diagnostic models, subsequently called micro-scale meteorological models. Nowadays these models are commercially available and widely used in environmental impact studies.

Road Map Towards a Flood Resilient Urban Environment

In 2005 the EU COST office approved a new action, the action C22 – Urban Flood Management (COST-UFM). During four years more than 50 scientists from 13 European nations have been cooperating in this action with the objective to demonstrate weaknesses of today‘s knowledge and practice in urban flood management, to provide examples of best practice and enhancement in flood risk management and to provide a framework for future research on a European level.

On behalf of the International Hydrological Program of UNESCO and EU COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) politicians, policy and decision makers, researchers and practitioners have been invited to the closing event of this COST action, the final conference Road Map Towards a Flood Resilient Urban Environment. With the intention to combine the forces of Global and European communities this conference has been organized jointly by UNESCO-IHP and COST-UFM in the Headquarters of UNESCO in Paris on November 26th and 27th, 2009. In a preceding event an INTERREG Day have been organized on November 25th.

It has been the objective of this conference to highlight the recent advances in the progression towards Flood Resilient Cities. 108 papers have been submitted for publication and oral presentation. After a demanding review process of the Scientific Board 83 papers have been selected for oral presentation.

These proceedings contain the program of the conference and the abstracts of all papers selected for oral presentation. The full text of these papers is printed on a CD which is attached at the end of this book. All papers are structured in the following five topics:

  • Policy, decision makers and institutions
  • Impact Assessment - climate change and anthropogenic drivers
  • Resilience Technology and non-structural measures – source, pathway and receptor control
  • Strategy, communication and capacity building
  • Lessons learnt from historic events

Special Issue of Media Research: Media and the Public Interest

  • Pages: 152
  • Author(s): Zrinjka Perusko
  • Publisher(s): Naklada Medijska Istrazivanja
  • ISBN/ISSN: 1330-6928

Behind the whole gamut of contemporary questions at the heart of European and international media policy debates is the question about the contemporary role of the media. Is the public interest being served by their performance? And what public interest should media serve today? Should it still be conveived only in terms of news and information programs, or can we find public interst content in other media genres, traditionally conceived as entertainement with little public value? Who decides what is socially useful? The aim of this thematic issue of Media Research is to begin to re-examine these issues in a comparative European perspective.
