ESR wins Best Paper at Computer Music Symposium
A paper resulting from a Short-Term Scientific Mission between Ghent University and ESMAE in Porto has won the Best Paper Award at the 12th Brazilian Symposium on Computer Science.
Luiz Naveda, an Early Stage Researcher from the Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music, took part in drafting a paper on Multidimensional Microtiming in Samba Music. Results are set to improve the study of music forms within the Afro-Brazilian context.
“We tried to investigate part of this multidimensional description of rhythmic experience using a systematic method based on computational approaches,” explains Naveda. “We developed a methodology that describes interactions between timing, metrical levels, intensity and spectral distributions from musical audio.” The set of multidimensional descriptors of microtiming are extracted from a database of 106 music excerpts, and are then clustered using machine learning methods.
The SBCM - Brazilian Symposium on Computer Music is a biannual event with international recognition in the field of computer music organised by NUCOM, the computer music interest group of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC).
