Striking a Balance in the Gender Debate
In its support for gender equality in research, COST hosted a training session on increasing women’s participation in science and promoting the gender dimension into research proposals.
The European Commission’s recent 'She Figures' reveal that women remain a minority in science, accounting for 30% of researchers in the EU in 2006. Their proportion is growing faster than men but not enough to indicate that the gender imbalance in science is self-correcting.
In response to this, an initiative was launched to provide the scientific community with practical tools to integrate gender aspects into FP7 research. COST took advantage of this opportunity to train its science officers on integrating the gender dimension to their daily work activities. The session took place at the COST Office in Brussels on 10 November 2009.
This one-day workshop set out to sensitise participants on the importance of creating a gender balanced research team. They learnt practical strategies to assist project applicants and teams in implementing a gender approach to their research proposals. The training method was interactive combining cognitive (knowledge-based) and inductive (experience-based) elements.
