Professor Francesco Fedi, President of the COST Committee of Senior Officials (CSO), was invited and participated in the Serbian Info Day in Belgrade on 29 June 2009. It was organised by the Serbian Ministry of Science and Technological Development and by the European Commission.
The objective of this event was to serve as one-stop shop for the Serbian scientific and business communities to get information about the opportunities offered by COST and by the Seventh EU Framework Programme (FP7). It helped to strengthen dialogue, identify potentially interested partners and pave the way for expanded collaboration within the European Research Area (ERA). The participation of representatives from COST, the European Commission and the Serbian Government, made this event a unique opportunity for more than 400 participants to discuss the role of research policy in the EU pre-accession process.
Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, provided information, examples of specific work programmes as well as practical aspects of participation in FP7 . Mr Giancarlo Caratti, Joint Research Centre (JRC), presented the activities of the Centre - whose main objective is to provide scientific and technological support for the EU policy-making - in areas of priority for the Republic of Serbia, such as food safety and quality, energy and health.
Professor Fedi, President of COST, illustrated the opportunities offered by this European intergovernmental network for coordination of nationall- funded research activities, one of the longest-running European instruments supporting co-operation among scientists and researchers across Europe.
Scientific sessions on food safety and quality, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), energy, health and nuclear energy concluded the event. The ICT activities within COST were presented by Ms Francesca Boscolo from the COST Office.
“After Bulgaria, Albania and Romania” commented Professor Fedi “this was a renewed pleasure and an additional extremely useful occasion offered to COST to present its activities together with those of the Joint Research Centre and I am very grateful to JRC for this opportunity.”
