Tribute to Dr Gerard Butler
COST is saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Dr Gerard Butler on 19 January 2012.
Dr Butler worked in ICT Commercialisation in Enterprise Ireland and will be greatly missed by his colleagues. He enjoyed participating in COST and was the Irish delegate on the ICT Domain Committee from 2006 to 2010, during which time he was very active in assessing COST proposals. He was also rapporteur to a number of COST Actions including COST Action 286 'Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in Diffused Communication Systems'.
Dr Butler joined Teltec Ireland in 1992 as a Senior Research Officer in Trinity College Dublin, where he worked on projects in the area of Mobile and Wireless communications, a topic in which he held considerable expertise.
He also had considerable expertise in audio and acoustics, the area in which he completed his PhD. In 2003, he moved to Enterprise Ireland Headquarters where he worked in ICT Commercialisation.
Rita Ward, COST CSO and National Coordinator, from Enterprise Ireland would like to add that "Gerry was very well liked and respected by his colleagues and by clients in the colleges and universities for his technical expertise and his calm demeanour. A man of great intelligence, he never sought to use that intelligence to belittle someone, but he rather used his gentle charm and wit to persuade. One of his passions was the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue and he was involved in many rescue missions both in this country and abroad. There are many travellers who will have reason to be thankful to this quiet, gentle man."
May he rest in peace.
