ICT 2008: "I"s to the Future

ICT 2008 is Europe's biggest research event for information and communication technologies. COST was present with an interactive exhibition stand.
The biennial ICT Event (formerly called the "IST Event") hosted leading visionaries from academia and industry and addressed topics as diverse as Europe's role in shaping the future internet, ICT's contribution to advancing the sustainability agenda and alternative research paths for future ICT components and systems.
The interactive COST Exhibition stand demonstrated the leading-edge of Artificial Intelligence techniques applied to Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and social games environments, including:
- “From Social Theory to Believable Game Environments - Social Perception and Behavior for Online Avatars”: Visitors controlled an Avatar in a lively multi-user 3D environment where characters follow natural and realistic behavior patterns.
- “Interacting with Virtual Humans”: This part of the Exhibit featured several displays, like a virtual trainer who monitors the user's behavior, or a demonstration of the use of motion capture, physical simulation and kinematics on a single body.
- “Multimodal Signal Processing for Dance Synthesis by Analysis”: This was a recording of a dance animation generated by a multi-camera video.
- “Alternative Augmentative Communication System”: Visitors tried out a communication tool for the mobility- and speech-impaired.
- “Infant Voice-controlled Robot”: A demonstration of human interaction with, and control of, robots.
- “Data of Interactions and Vocal and Facial Emotional Expressions”: Recorded clips of storytelling by adults and children help researchers explain to visitors how new algorithms and mathematical models for vocal and facial expression recognition are developed.
- “Human-like Turn-taking in Spoken Dialogue: Getting the Envelope Feedback Right”: Software showing progress made in HMI, as far as spoken dialogue is concerned.
- “Semantic Multimodal Analysis of Digital Media”: A search engine capable of retrieving different types of digital media was shown.
